Everyone wants to know where the name “Berkshire Grey” came from.  The answer is that there are a couple of layers to the name “Berkshire Grey.”

First, we are based in the Boston area and proud of our New England roots.  The Berkshire region really resonates as a special place for a lot of our team, so it grounds us.

Secondly, the “Grey” is short for “grey matter.”  The secret sauce to everything we do is intelligence. Our robotic systems are intelligent, they are constantly learning and continuously improving.

Thinking, learning, intelligence – those all describe our people and our solutions.

Lastly, when you put them together – Berkshire + Grey – it’s evocative of an established, serious, solid company you can trust to deliver what we say we will deliver.  It isn’t as sexy as some other tech names and there is no cute “ly” randomly stuck on the end of a made-up word. That just isn’t us. Integrity is core to everything we do, and that is much more important to who we are.

In a sense you could say – our name lets you know where we’re from, what we’re about, and what you can expect when you work with us.

We thought about other names.  We held a contest and everything.  We even registered a few other website domains.  In the end, we realized “Berkshire Grey” fits us really well.  We are not flashy. We are foundational and transformative at the same time.

As a side note, we are totally OK if you refer to us by our nickname, “BG.”  And just so there isn’t any confusion, our headquarters is actually right outside of Boston in Lexington, Massachusetts as you can clearly see on our CONTACT page.
